You can come to Thailand visa exempt as a UK citizen for 30 days, or you can apply for a tourist visa at the Thai embassy in the UK which is good for 60 days and can be extended once for another 30 days. Tourist visa are free now until Mar 2011. You being is debt will not affect your visa. While in Thailand you need to find a job, and get accepted by that school, you then need to go to Malaysia (Recommend by most who teach here) to get a working visa. You then return to Thailand with a one year visa but now your school has to help you apply for a work permit to work. To teach in Thailand legally you need a degree in Teaching, or a degree in any other subject and a TEFL. To teach illegal here, you need to keep getting tourist visas in Laos or Malaysia every 90 days.
