If you want to visit Canada on your J-1 and come back while your visa is still valid, you can do that with just a signature from your immigration advisor. Those signature for travel are valid for one year. However, you need to make sure that your visa stamp is still valid (since your visa is for such a short period of time, you’re probably okay). If your visa stamp is not valid (the visa stamp is the one in your passport), you will not be able to come back into the country, even if your J-1 program is valid. You’ll have to go to a Thai embassy and get a new visa stamp before you attempt to enter the US again. However, if you’re on a J-1 visa, you should be asking your immigration advisor. They will need to sign your paperwork and they may have extra rules for their institute.
