You can enter for 30 days without a visa if you arrive at a Thailand airport. Should you plan to stay for longer just apply for the visa at the:

Visa on arrival is good for 30 days and you don’t have to pay anybody,
If you want to stay longer contact the Thai embassy nearest you and ask for a tourist visa, it will allow you to stay 30 days and then you can file for 30 day extension by paying 1,900 baht (max two extensions).
If you want longer (like a year or more) you either need to marry a Thai or be over 50 years old with 800,000 baht in the bank or try for a ED (education) visa with a language school.

How long do you want to stay in Thailand? Like the other posts say if it is for a short visit of 30 days or less, with a UK passport, you can just show at the up at the airport and get a stamp in your passport allowing you to stay legally.

How long do you want to stay in Thailand? There are ways to stretch out the 30 days but if you mean you want to live there much longer or for years that is another thing. If you mean you want a work visa or some sort of other visa that is something different.
